Your Solar Bill Didn't Drop as Much as You Expected. Here's Why.

Your system is producing, but the bill didn't fall the way you were told it would. Nine reasons that happens in the Philippines, with the numbers behind each — and how to tell an ordinary explanation from an actual fault.
Quick Answer
Most of the time the system is fine and the expectation was wrong. Nine ordinary explanations account for the great majority of disappointing solar bills, and only one of them is a fault. The most underappreciated: the rate went up. Meralco's typical household rate rose 14.1% between January and August 2026. In our worked example that quietly absorbed ₱550 a month — 21% of the household's expected saving — without anything at all being wrong with the system. The second: export is not credited at your retail rate. Energy you use on site is worth ₱14.7833 per kWh. Energy you export earns roughly the generation component, about ₱9.25. A household exporting half its output is ₱1,798 a month short of the naive calculation. The third, and the most human: consumption went up. Adding one aircon, a second refrigerator and a chest freezer after installation can add 389 kWh a month — enough to erase a large offset entirely. Before blaming the panels, check whether net metering was actually approved. Until it is, everything you export is given away for free.
Start here: what should you actually be saving?
Almost every disappointment starts with a number that was never realistic.
Work out your true position before diagnosing anything:
1. Find your actual production. From the monitoring app, in kWh for the month. Not an estimate.
2. Find your actual consumption. From the bill, in kWh. Not pesos.
3. Compare production against the model. A proper proposal includes an expected production figure by month. Compare August against what August was supposed to produce — not against your best month, and not against a salesperson's headline.
4. Calculate your true rate. Divide your total bill by total kWh consumed. That is your real all-in rate per kilowatt-hour, and it will differ from the headline figure.
If production matches the model and consumption has not changed, your system is working. What follows explains where the money went.
1 · The rate rose while you weren't looking
This is the biggest hidden cause, and almost nobody accounts for it.
Meralco's typical household rate went from ₱12.9508/kWh in January 2026 to ₱14.7833 in August — up 14.1% in eight months.
Take a household using 500 kWh a month before solar, and 300 kWh after — a 40% offset.

The rate rise absorbed ₱550 a month — 21% of the expected saving. The system delivered exactly what it promised. The goalposts moved.
There is a way to see this clearly: compare kilowatt-hours, not pesos. If your consumption fell from 500 to 300 kWh, your system is doing its job regardless of what the bill says.
And the uncomfortable corollary: without solar, that household's January bill of ₱6,475 would have become ₱7,392 by August. Their bill did not just fall — it fell while everyone else's rose.
2 · Export is not credited at your retail rate
The most common misunderstanding about net metering.
Energy you use on site displaces your full retail rate — ₱14.7833 per kWh. Energy you export earns roughly the generation component, about ₱9.2504. That is a 37% haircut on every exported kilowatt-hour.
For a system generating 650 kWh a month:

If your house is empty on weekdays, you are probably in the bottom half of that table. The system generates at midday while nobody is home, exports most of it, and earns two-thirds of what you assumed.
The fix is free: move laundry, ironing, water pumping, dishwashing and daytime cooking into daylight hours. Every kilowatt-hour shifted from evening to midday is worth an extra ₱5.53.
3 · Your consumption went up
The most human explanation, and the one people are least likely to consider.
It is well documented across every energy efficiency programme: when running something feels cheaper, people run more of it. Solar owners add the aircon they were rationing, buy the second refrigerator, stop worrying about the water heater.

On a household previously using 500 kWh, that is 78% more consumption — comfortably enough to erase a large solar offset and leave the bill looking barely changed.
How to check: compare your kWh consumption now against the same month last year, before solar. If consumption rose, the system is not the problem.
This is not necessarily a bad outcome. Being able to run the aircon without flinching has value. But it is a lifestyle upgrade you bought, not a system that failed.
4 · Net metering was never approved
Check this before anything else, because the money involved is large.
Until your net metering application is approved and the bi-directional meter installed, everything you export goes to the grid for free. A standard meter either does not record it or, on older units, may even count it against you.
For a 6 kWp system:

How to check: look at your bill for a bi-directional or export reading, and ask your installer directly for a copy of the approval and the executed net metering agreement. "It's being processed" is not an answer after several months.
This is the step most commonly abandoned after final payment — which is why we hold back part of our own fee until a client's approval comes through.
5 · You installed in the dry season and it's now August
Solar output in the Philippines is strongly seasonal, and a system commissioned in March or April delivers its best month first.

August is roughly 64% of April. Entirely normal, and it was in the design model.

6 · Fixed charges never go away
Small, but it explains why the bill never reaches zero.
Supply charge ₱16.38 a month, metering charge ₱5.00 a month. ₱21.38 monthly, ₱256.56 a year, regardless of whether you consume a single kilowatt-hour.
Anyone who told you solar would eliminate your bill was wrong. On a grid-connected system it cannot.
7 · You expected bracket savings you didn't get
Meralco's distribution charge is tiered, and the rate applies to your entire consumption rather than the portion above each threshold. Dropping into a lower band re-rates every kilowatt-hour, which is genuinely valuable — but only if you actually cross a threshold.

8 · The system was undersized for your actual usage
Some systems are sold as packages rather than designed against consumption. If yours was quoted from a photo of one bill, or from a satellite image, the sizing may simply not match your household.
How to check: annual production divided by annual consumption gives your theoretical offset. If that is 25% and you were told to expect 60%, the arithmetic never worked.
This is not always fixable cheaply, but it is worth knowing which problem you have. Adding capacity to a well-installed system is usually straightforward if the inverter has headroom.
9 · Something is genuinely wrong
Last on the list because it is the least likely — but it does happen, and August hides it well.
Signs of a real fault:
- One string reading materially below the others under the same sky. Not weather. It will still be there in November.
- Production well below the model on a genuinely clear day. Habagat has bright intervals — use one.
- Inverter showing red or flashing amber, or fault codes in the history.
- A step change, where production dropped suddenly on a specific date rather than declining gradually.
- Monitoring gone dark. Sometimes a communications issue, sometimes the account was under the installer's control.
Soiling is the most common real cause and the easiest to fix. Dust and deposits accumulate through the dry season and reduce output continuously without anything looking wrong.
What to do now
1. Compare kilowatt-hours, not pesos. Consumption before solar against consumption now. This single comparison resolves most cases.
2. Confirm net metering approval. Ask for the document. If it does not exist, that is where your money is going.
3. Check production against the monthly model, not against your best month.
4. Look at one clear day. If a sunny August afternoon still produces well below a sunny May afternoon, something changed.
5. Shift what you can into daylight. Free, immediate, and worth ₱5.53 for every kilowatt-hour moved.
6. Get an independent assessment if the numbers still do not reconcile. Any qualified contractor can inspect a system regardless of who installed it.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my Meralco bill still high after installing solar?
The most common reasons are that electricity rates rose after installation, that a large share of your generation is exported at the lower generation-only credit rather than used on site, or that household consumption increased after the system went in. Comparing kilowatt-hours before and after — rather than pesos — usually identifies which applies.
Does solar credit me at the same rate I pay?
No. Energy consumed on site displaces your full retail rate of about ₱14.7833 per kWh. Energy exported to the grid earns roughly the generation component, around ₱9.2504 — a difference of about 37%. This is why using power during daylight hours is worth considerably more than exporting it.
How do I know if my solar system is faulty or just seasonal?
Compare against your proposal's expected production for the current month, not against your best month. Check whether one string is reading below the others under the same sky, look for a sudden step change on a specific date rather than gradual decline, and check production on a genuinely clear day. Seasonal decline affects the whole array evenly; a fault usually does not.
What if my net metering was never approved?
Everything you export is being given away without credit — potentially ₱1,200 to ₱3,000 a month for a 6 kWp system depending on how much you export. Ask your installer for a copy of the approval and the executed agreement with your distribution utility. This is the step most commonly abandoned after final payment.
Can I add more panels if my system is too small?
Often yes, if the inverter has capacity headroom and roof space remains. Adding capacity may also require notifying your distribution utility and possibly a fresh net metering application, so it needs handling properly rather than quietly.
Should solar eliminate my electricity bill completely?
No. Fixed supply and metering charges of ₱21.38 a month apply regardless of consumption, and most households still import power at night. Substantial reduction is realistic; elimination requires disconnecting from the grid entirely.
The uncomfortable summary
Most disappointing solar bills are not faulty systems. They are a combination of a rate that rose, exports credited below retail, and consumption that quietly increased — three things that compound, and none of which are visible in the peso figure at the bottom of the bill.
Compare kilowatt-hours before and after. If consumption dropped and production matches the model, your system is working, and the money went somewhere the bill does not show you.
